Popcorn, always a favorite treat

Popcorn, always a favorite treat

In searching the web today, I found the Grand Rapids Popcorn Company and a few interesting facts.

Did you know that popcorn itself only has 35 calories per cup? Of course, that does not include the butter, caramel, chocolate, nuts, etc. Just popcorn!

This company has a Kids Club Page on the web where the young at heart can get details about contests. They also give a free 16oz Flush Puppie drink for bringing back your colored picture. More about that on their web:

Grand Rapids Popcorn has a Flavor of the Week also. For the week of July 8-14: Americana, 4oz bag-$2.10; Americana 1# bag, $4.75. This is a combination of Cherry, Blue Raspberry and Vanilla popcorn. Sounds delicious.

Goodwill Industries of Greater Grand Rapids, Inc. announces a second location opening for its newest retail concept – blue, a Goodwill boutique. Goodwill plans to open both blue boutiques in mid-April. The boutiques will be located at 974 Cherry in East Hills and in MoDiv at 40 Monroe Center in downtown Grand Rapids.

Fashion: Not Just for Women

Fashion: Not Just for Women

Written by Missy Black

A fashionable men's club is forming in Grand Rapids, and if you follow the finger pointing, key players include Jim Murray, general manager of A.K. Rikk's and Stylist Kev Couture, along with a slew of other personalities.

"Fashion is everything to me. I love being able to make someone feel good about themselves through fashion. That's my high," Couture said.

And it's not just Couture who's feeling good as a result of fashion. Many men about town are picking up on an oft-overlooked trend.

"Men are starting to take notice. They think, I need a crisp haircut and cologne. It's all in the details — from the watches to the socks," says Ryan Slusarzyk, corporate business travel manager for Amway Hotel Corporation.

If you're one of those brave Black Friday shoppers, we would like hear from you. Please send us you photos along with your name, location, and a brief comment about your experience to MyTown@wzzm13.com for our My Town Black Friday photo gallery to be published early next week.

Until then, good luck and safe shopping!!

Taking lessons from R.I.T. Music

Taking lessons from R.I.T. Music

Frank Nawrot, lead singer and guitarist for local band Absinthe, and a lifetime Grand Rapids resident, started playing guitar as a teenager.

He grew up in the Creston district and took lessons from long-time R.I.T. Music guitar instructor and Berklee College of Music graduate, Steve Lechtanski.

Now Nawrot writes all of his own music, plays dozens of shows per year in and around the Grand Rapids area, and has earned a degree in music from Grand Rapids Community College.

Nawrot says he bought his favorite guitar from R.I.T. many years ago and that the staff encourage him to bring it in anytime he has a problem to troubleshoot it for free.

"R.I.T. is my favorite music store," said Nawrot. "[They] just generally make you feel more comfortable."
