GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) -- Downtown Grand Rapids Inc. (DGRI) and Neighborhood Ventures are pleased to announce the top 10 finalists who will compete to win the title of Grandwich 2014.

 

On July 8, over 30 restaurants entered their sandwich creations into a competition to determine the best Grand Rapids sandwich of 2014. For almost three weeks, the public was encouraged to visit participating restaurants in Grand Rapids, try the sandwiches entries, and vote for their favorites. Public vote determined the top 10 sandwiches, which are listed below in alphabetical order.

GRAND RAPIDS TOWNSHIP, Mich. — The owners of a new tap house taking shape on the East Beltline has a name.

RedWater Restaurant Group will call its newest restaurant “Gravity”, based off the brewing term defining the alcohol level of a particular craft beer.  The restaurant is taking shape at the site of the former Malarky’s restaurant, which closed after its owners announced plans to retire.  Construction on Gravity began late last month.

GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) - Restaurant Week is about a month away, but you can start making your plans by salivating over the menus.

The 5th annual event runs from Aug. 13 to Aug. 24 at 66 Grand Rapids restaurants. This year, the theme is "Perfect Pairings" to showcase beverages that pair well with foods.

Restaurants are now taking reservations for Restaurant Week Grand Rapids. This year, 44 restaurants will offer 3-course locally inspired menus for $28 per person, including:

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.—Restaurants across Grand Rapids will give you a new solution to satisfy your taste buds starting Tuesday, July 8 as the Grandwich competition returns.

This is the 4th year for the contest, which determines Grand Rapids’ favorite sandwich.  This year, there are 26 entries featuring a variety of ingredients, from a bun made of deep fried Ramen noodles to jicama slaw.   This year’s entries include:

  • Bacon Jam Grilled Cheese – A Moveable Feast
  • Crazy Train- Bagger Dave’s
  • Picnic on the Grand – Birch Lodge
  • Name TBA - Bulls Head Tavern
  • Madame Cheshire –Cheshire Grill

My Town: Grand Rapids Township restaurant to become new tap house

GRAND RAPIDS TOWNSHIP, Mich.—A transformation is underway at a Grand Rapids Township restaurant.

RedWater Restaurant Group is renovating Malarkey’s Restaurant along the East Beltline entrance to I-196 into a new tap house restaurant. Construction began late last month.

The new restaurant will feature an open kitchen, indoor and outdoor seating, as well as fire pits and live music.  Executives say the restaurant will feature American pub fare and full entrée dinners, as well one of the largest selections of craft beer on draught in the state, with 64 taps.

“We are Beer City USA and we want to help add to the allure of this great distinction by capturing the attention of visitors coming to visit Grand Rapids, as well as serving our beer-loving community in style,” said Craig Smith, Chief Operating Officer of Redwater Restaurant Group.

The new restaurant is expected to open to the public in October.

Caught Being Safe program launches statewide

Michigan State Police, local law enforcement and Michigan’s Field Neurosciences Institute have teamed up with McDonald’s of Michigan to once again launch “Caught Being Safe,” a statewide bicycle/scooter helmet safety program. Kids wearing helmets and “caught being safe” by participating law enforcement officials will treated to a free ice cream cone or Apple Dippers at McDonald’s. 

According to the Field Neurosciences Institute (of Michigan): “Caught Being Safe! has shown a significant increase in both helmet utilization and public awareness regarding the critical importance of wearing a bicycle helmet. This program has impacted not only children but adults as well.”
