Did you know that every KaBOOM! playground is unique and designed by kids? At Design Day, you can help design the playground too as children put crayons to paper and show us all what a great place to play means to them.  Join Friends of GR Parks, the City of GR Parks and Rec., Creston Neighborhood Association and KaBOOM! to help make these kids’ dreams a reality!

A right lane closure for bridge reconstruction will be in place Thursday from 9 a.m. to noon on eastbound Interstate 196 under Fuller Avenue.

(Grand Rapids, MI) – The 2011 Taste of Grand Rapids & BBQ Competition is just around the corner. The event kicks off Friday, July 22nd and continues Saturday, July 23rd for two days of food tasting, live music, and a barbecue competition. Hours are 3pm to 10pm on Friday, July 22nd and 11am to 10pm on Saturday, July 23rd. The Taste of Grand Rapids will be held at John Ball Park, 1300 West Fulton Street, Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Admission and parking at the Taste of Grand Rapids are free, which makes it a weekend full of affordable family fun. Patrons may purchase tastes and samples of food from over 25 participating Grand Rapids area restaurants and enjoy live, non-stop entertainment. Kids can enjoy the designated Children’s Area, and adults can enjoy beer and wine with their tasty food samples.

Grand Rapids Michigan, May 19, 2011 – The Rapid Wheelmen, of Grand Rapids, Michigan, are now accepting registrations for the 2011, 100 GRAND BICYCLE TOUR. This year’s 100 GRAND marks the 38th year running, or rolling, for this fixture in the West Michigan cycling community.

While the 100 GRAND names refers to the classic “100 mile” or “Century” route offered for dedicated and competitive cyclists, the club also provides a number of routes suited to all types of rider, and abilities. Routes of 17, 36, 65, 105 miles, and a new 141-mile route for cyclist training for distance and endurance events, are available. Those riders opting for the 141 mile route must pre-register and be prepared to ride at 7:00 a.m. Day-of-event registration for all other riders opens at 6:45 a.m. and closes at 9:30. It is suggested that riders be on the road no later than 9:00 a.m., depending on route length.

Thursday Jeff Lambert, the president and managing partner of Lambert, Edwards & Associates, presented a $10,000 check to the YMCA of Greater Grand Rapids. 

The donation will fund swim lessons for urban youth at the Greater Grand Rapids and Metro Detroit YMCA brances. 

The U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention reports drowning is the second leading cause of injury-related death among children under the age of 15

Adopt One- Get One Free Kitten Promotion

(Grand Rapids, MI) – For the entire month of May, the Kent County Animal Shelter is hosting an “Adopt One, Get One Free” kitten event.

This program is a partnership between Vicky’s Pet Connection (VPC) and the Kent County Animal Shelter (KCAS).  VPC and KCAS have been teaming up and providing services to help find homes for adoptable pets since 2000.  Vicky’s Pet Connection is a non-profit animal rescue group, established in 1998, that has agreed to pay the spay/neuter fee and adoption fees for one of every two kittens adopted as a pair.  Typically, a male kitten neutering fee is $55, a female kitten spay fee is $70 and the adoption fee is $50.
