Company donates storm comfort wraps for shelter dogs

Company donates storm comfort wraps for shelter dogs

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.—   A company is stepping in to help the Kent County Animal Shelter reach its goal of helping pets.

Mindy Smith-Pierman organized a fundraiser to provide 70 ThunderShirts for shelter dogs.  The ThunderShirt tightly wraps around dogs, providing extra comfort to animals normally scared during thunderstorms. Kent County Animal Shelter representatives say dogs are often come into the shelter skittish, either by nature or because of years of neglect and abuse. Storms usually increase anxiety in the dogs, prompting potential owners to shy away from choosing that particular pet.

Last week, Smith-Pierman’s fundraiser with Chow Hound and Pet Supplies Plus covered the cost of 55 ThunderShirts, 15 shy of her goal.  But when the maker of ThunderShirts heard about the effort, it decided to donate the last 15 wraps.

Animal shelter receives "thunder shirts"

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WZZM) - The Kent County Animal Shelter now has a new tool to use for dogs in severe weather.

The ThunderShirt is supposed to tightly wrap around dogs, providing a little extra comfort during the scary sounds of thunderstorms.

Kent County Animal Shelter representatives say the dogs often come into the shelter as skiddish animals, either by nature or because of years of neglect and abuse. Storms usually give the dogs more anxiety, prompting potential owners to shy away from choosing that particular pet.

54 ThunderShirts were donated on Tuesday thanks to Chow Hound and Pet Supplies Plus.
