Police ID man hit by car on Leonard Street

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WZZM) -- The 26-year-old man struck by a car on the city's Northeast Side remains in critical condition, police say.

The man, now identified as Mohemeed Gene Hussin, was hit around 6:35 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 19, near Leonard Street and Plymouth Avenue NE.

Police said Hussin was about 40 yards west of the intersection, attempting to cross the street, when he was hit by a westbound vehicle on Leonard. The driver stayed at the scene after the collision and was cooperating with police.

Car crashes into GR building, 2 hospitalized

GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) -- Two people were hospitalized after their car crashed into a building.

It happened shortly after 8:00 p.m. Thursday on Alpine Avenue near Crosby Street.

Neighbors tell us the building is a storage facility for a nearby business. No one was inside the building at the time.

A man and a woman in the car were both taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Crews shut down Alpine Avenue while they worked to clear the roadway.

Ceremony celebrates 'topping off' of MSU's Research Center

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WZZM) -- City and state leaders gathered in downtown Grand Rapids Thursday morning to mark a milestone in the construction of Michigan State University's new medical research center.

More than a dozen MSU researchers and 25 construction trade workers watched as the last construction beam was hoisted. On the beam, were an American flag representing patriotism, an evergreen tree symbolizing good luck and prosperity, and an MSU Spartan flag representing MSU's commitment to the Grand Rapids community.

The $88.1 million, six-story, 162,800 square foot facility will include research program spaces and five core labs that will benefit MSU College of Human Medicine scientists and researchers from MSU's partnering institutions.

University leaders say the research center will have a $ 28 million dollar impact on the city every year and will support more than 400 jobs.

GRPD investigating car-pedestrian crash

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WZZM) -- Police are investigating an accident involving a car and a pedestrian on the city's northeast side.

It happened around 6:35 a.m. Thursday at Leonard Street and Plymouth Avenue NE.

Police tell WZZM 13 the pedestrian, a 29-year-old man, is in critical condition. His identity is not being released at this time.

The driver involved in the accident remained at the scene after the collision, and is cooperating with officers. Alcohol does not appear to be a factor.

2 shot in GR armed robbery

Police: 2 houses shot on GR's Northeast Side

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WZZM) -- Two houses appeared to be shot at early Sunday morning on Grand Rapids' Northeast Side, police say.

Authorities investigated the 600 block of Lafayette Avenue where a couple of houses were hit with bullets, said a Grand Rapids police lieutenant. The incident happened around 3:50 a.m. Sunday.

There are no known suspects at this time.
