Ground broken on residential, retail Belknap project

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WZZM) -- A Grand Rapids neighborhood is getting a makeover, thanks to a new residential and retail development on the way.

Developers are building the complex on the corner of Coit and Hastings in the Belknap neighborhood.

The project, called the Gateway at Belknap, will have 88 apartments, a restaurant, and retail space. Orion Construction president John Wheeler said he believes it will have a positive impact on the neighborhood. "We're creating a $22-million value," he said. "That's pretty big."

The Gateway project is expected to be the beginning of what could be an overall revitalization of the neighborhood. It's within walking distance of the Medical Mile. "It's all good," Wheeler said. "The homes we bought were not in good condition," adding that Orion Construction bought 11 rental homes and tore them down to make space for the project.
