PLAINFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WZZM) -- A group of children selling painted rocks to get money for their father's medication has raised so much money that they will use the extra funds to help others.

Justin Johnson developed a blood clot from a recent surgery on his knee. He says his insurance wouldn't immediately cover the cost of the medication and he needed $510.

His children started collecting, painting and selling rocks on Coit Ave. NE to raise the money needed to pay for the medication.

Johnson says the effort raised more than $1,100. He says what his children and done -- and the response from the community have made him feel awesome.

"Not just because I can now afford the medications, but because these kids had an idea," he says. "Nobody shot down their dream, and nobody told them 'no' to anything. Whether they were going to succeed or fail was on their own, and obviously, they've made me a proud dad."

Johnson says he and his children plan to donate the extra money they raised to charity.
