Grand Rapids Coffee Roasters, "The Saturday Experience" | Business
In spite of the cold wintry weather this past weekend, my friend, Pat and I had quite the excursion. One nice thing about Grand Rapids, MI. You can always find something to do and it doesn’t have to cost an arm & a leg.
It all started out with a visit to “The Saturday Experience” at the Grand Rapids Coffee Roasters in Grand Rapids, MI. This wholesale coffee bean business is located in an old factory on Hall St. SW, just beyond Godfrey St., around the back of the building. We entered at the only door we saw that was on the second floor and proceeded to walk up steps to the 5th floor, where we found a room filled with eclectic furnishings, lots to look at, amazing teas and delicious coffee. There is also a freight elevator but I think it was out of order that day.
This business was started in 2007 by Craig Patterson, who I later on found out, graduated from Grandville High School with my son Scott. Craig was very gracious and took the time to sit down with us and explain the many aspects of the business. According to him, they roast coffee for many of the coffee shops in the Grand Rapids area every day. I also found out from him that coffee beans are not really coffee beans at all but are little cherry pits that are imported from Central America, and once roasted, expand and become the beans we are all familiar with. The roaster is part of the atmosphere where people can watch the process. Both Craig and Alene Elisevich seem to stay very busy and are ready to answer any questions people have.
“The Saturday Experience” is a day from 10am to 3pm, where people may come and have coffee, free of charge. They had three different flavors along with expresso on our visit. Both Pat & I got some coffee beans to go along with a little candy treat. This was definitely something different to do and a very enlightening experience as well.
